RH5196 Rare and Unusual Gorham Ale Jug 1886

An unusual heavy sterling silver lidded ale jug by the Gorham Company with the date letter for 1886. The lid hinges back to open. The handle is a wide hand hammered strap work with rivets applied to the body. The tapered body is engraved with wood grain staves in the form of a barrel and there are detailed straps applied to give extra dimension. On the front there is an embossed detailed scene of two men in conversation and the back of a pub chair. One elderly fellow smoking a long pipe and the other with a hat staring with a look of deep concentration. Weight: 30.5 troy ounces. Height: 9 1/2". The lid has been strengthened and there are some dents to the body.
